How to read a GSTIN

Every GSTIN follows a fixed 15-character structure:

Position Represents
1–2 State code (e.g. 27 = Maharashtra)
3–12 PAN of the business or proprietor
13 Entity/registration number on that PAN in that state
14 Default value "Z"
15 Check digit

This tool checks the structure only — it confirms the GSTIN is well-formed and tells you the state, embedded PAN, and holder type. It does not query GSTN's live database, so it can't confirm the number is actually active or that returns are being filed against it.

Why GSTIN format matters for e-commerce sellers

Marketplaces like Amazon, Flipkart, and Meesho validate the GSTIN you submit during seller onboarding. A malformed GSTIN — wrong length, wrong state code, invalid PAN pattern — is one of the most common reasons seller KYC gets rejected. Checking the format before you submit it saves a round trip.

To confirm a GSTIN is genuinely registered

Structure validation isn't the same as an active-status check. For that, search the number on the official GST portal — it will show registration status, legal name, and filing status.
