GST Registration Rules in India — A Quick Explainer
When is GST Registration Mandatory?
You must register for GST if any of the following apply:
-
E-commerce marketplace seller — If you sell through Amazon, Flipkart, Meesho, Snapdeal, or any ONDC-enabled marketplace, GST registration is mandatory with no turnover threshold. This is the most common trigger for new sellers.
-
Interstate supply — If you supply goods or services to customers in a different state, GST registration is mandatory regardless of turnover.
-
Turnover exceeds threshold — ₹40 lakh per year for goods (₹20 lakh for services; ₹10 lakh for North-Eastern states).
-
Casual or non-resident taxable person — Registration required before starting business.
When is GST Registration Optional (but Beneficial)?
Even if you're below the threshold and selling only within your state, voluntary GST registration lets you:
- Claim ITC on raw materials, packaging, freight, and other business purchases
- Issue GST invoices to B2B buyers who need to claim ITC from you
- Appear more credible to larger distributors and institutional buyers
Penalties for Non-Compliance
Selling on a marketplace without GST registration is treated as tax evasion. Penalties range from 10% of the tax amount (minimum ₹10,000) up to 100% of the tax due, plus 18% annual interest on the outstanding amount.
