Udyam Registration for MSMEs — Free Government Process, Done Right

Udyam registration is free on the government portal, but a mismatched PAN or GST digit stalls auto-verification for days. Dhanaay reviews your application before submission — free registration, error-free filing.

Last reviewed:

Udyam registration costs nothing on the government portal. What costs you time is the auto-verification silently rejecting a mismatched PAN or GST digit — and finding out three days later when nothing's moved.

Udyam is the single online registration for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises, run by the Ministry of MSME. It's optional — unlike GST registration, nothing legally requires it — but it unlocks protections and credit access that unregistered businesses simply don't get: automatic interest on delayed payments, collateral-free loans up to ₹2 crore, and priority in government procurement.

What Udyam registration actually unlocks

  • 45-day payment protection. Under Section 16 of the MSMED Act, any buyer must pay a registered MSME within 45 days of delivery or acceptance. Miss it, and interest accrues automatically at three times the RBI repo rate, compounded monthly. Delayed-payment disputes go through the MSME Samadhan portal, not civil court.
  • Collateral-free credit up to ₹2 crore, via the Credit Guarantee Fund Trust for Micro and Small Enterprises (CGTMSE) — no property or personal guarantee required for many working-capital and term loans.
  • Priority sector lending status — faster loan processing and marginally better rates from banks required to meet MSME lending quotas.
  • TReDS access — sell your unpaid invoices to financiers for immediate cash instead of waiting out your buyer's payment cycle. See our TReDS guide for how it works.
  • Reserved government procurement — many tenders carry an MSME set-aside you're not eligible for without a Udyam number.

Who qualifies, and at what size

Since April 2025, manufacturing and service businesses share one classification — there's no separate, lower services threshold anymore. Investment is measured on plant, machinery, and equipment, not inventory or working capital.

Category Investment Turnover
Micro Up to ₹2.5 crore Up to ₹10 crore
Small Up to ₹25 crore Up to ₹100 crore
Medium Up to ₹125 crore Up to ₹500 crore

How registration actually works

  1. Confirm eligibility. Have your Aadhaar (proprietor, managing partner, or karta), PAN, and GSTIN (if you have one) ready.
  2. Go to udyamregistration.gov.in — the only official portal. No other site can register you, and none is entitled to charge a government fee.
  3. Enter business details — name, entity type, address, bank account.
  4. Enter investment and turnover figures. These are auto-verified against your PAN and GST data in real time — this is the step where a mismatched digit stalls the application.
  5. Submit. You receive a permanent Udyam Registration Number and e-certificate immediately. No renewal, ever.

For a seller with GST already in place, the portal steps alone typically take under 15 minutes — assuming everything matches on the first pass.

Where Dhanaay's assisted service comes in

The registration itself is free and self-serve. Where sellers lose time is the auto-verification against PAN and GST records, which fails silently on small mismatches — a business name that doesn't exactly match your PAN record, an address format the portal doesn't parse the way you typed it.

Dhanaay's team reviews your documents and the details you're about to submit before you hit that button — not after the portal has already flagged an error and you're starting a new application from scratch.

What "MSME Samadhan" actually does

If a buyer misses the 45-day payment window and doesn't pay the automatic interest voluntarily, you can file a complaint on the MSME Samadhan portal. The relevant Micro and Small Enterprises Facilitation Council hears the case and can order payment plus interest — without you needing to go to civil court. This is the enforcement mechanism behind the Section 16 protection, and it only applies to Udyam-registered businesses.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Udyam registration actually free?+

Yes. Udyam registration on udyamregistration.gov.in carries no government fee — it never has. If a site asks you to pay a fee to "register," it is not the official portal. Dhanaay's fee, where you use our assisted service, is only for document review and application accuracy — not for the registration itself.

What changed in the MSME classification from April 2025?+

Manufacturing and service enterprises now share a single classification based on both investment and turnover — there's no separate, lower limit for services anymore. Micro is investment up to ₹2.5 crore and turnover up to ₹10 crore; Small is up to ₹25 crore investment and ₹100 crore turnover; Medium is up to ₹125 crore investment and ₹500 crore turnover. Investment is calculated on plant, machinery, and equipment — not working capital or inventory.

Does Udyam registration protect me if a buyer delays payment?+

Yes. Under Section 16 of the MSMED Act, a buyer must settle payment to a registered MSME within 45 days of delivery or acceptance. Miss that window and the buyer owes interest automatically, at three times the RBI repo rate — compounded monthly. This protection does not exist for unregistered businesses. Delayed-payment complaints go through the MSME Samadhan portal.

What happens if my business grows past the MSME limits after registering?+

Your Udyam registration stays valid — there's no cancellation for outgrowing a category. You simply move up a tier (Micro to Small, Small to Medium) or lose MSME status entirely if you exceed the Medium threshold, and stop qualifying for MSME-specific benefits like CGTMSE collateral-free loans and the 45-day payment protection from that point forward.

Can I fix a mistake after submitting my Udyam application?+

Minor details — address, contact information — can be updated directly on the Udyam portal after registration. Errors in PAN, GSTIN, or investment/turnover figures that were auto-verified at submission are harder to correct and may require a fresh application. This is exactly the class of error Dhanaay's document review is built to catch before you submit.
